Bjarke Ingels Group was honored with an International award in November of 2016 for most innovative high-rise. The International Highrise Award (IHA) was presented by Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) to BIG for the creation of Via 57 West.
The award is presented every two years for the work that best represents the concept of future-oriented design, functionality, innovative technology, sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and how the design integrates into the urban landscape.
Via 57 West was one of 1500 projects worldwide considered for the 2016 award. The list was then reduced to 30 contestants, then made the list of top 5 finalists before being declared the unanimous winner. The panel of 8 judges come from industry experts around the globe, 4 of which come from Frankfurt am Main. All 30 nominated projects for Best Highrises of 2016/17 were on display at Deutsches Architekturmuseum headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany from November 4, 2016 until January 15, 2017
Via 57 West has been described with many terms including a tetrahydron, a hyperbolic parabaloid, and most recently a courtscraper, which is a combination of American skyscraper and European perimeter development.
Peter Cachola Schmal, DAM Director, was quoted by ArchDaily.com regarding the Via 57 West building saying “Basically, this project is a major milestone for housing, and not only in the extreme residential market of New York”.
Milrose Consultants Inc. has an article on their website indicating Via 57 West also received the 2016 CTBUH Tall Building Award presented by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
Possibly the most recognizable project in the world, BIG’s luxury apartments near Theater District in New York, has now received at least 3 awards for most outstanding building of 2016.
According to Architect Magazine, Via 57 West is one of 12 projects on the shortlist for the 2016 World Architecture Festival.
